Division of the Humanities and Social Sciences California Institute of Technology Pasadena, California 91125 Estimating Multinomial Choice Models Using Cyclic Monotonicity

چکیده
This paper proposes a new identification and estimation approach to semi-parametric multinomial choice models that easily applies to not only cross-sectional settings but also panel data settings with unobservable fixed effects. Our approach is based on cyclic monotonicity, which is a defining feature of the random utility framework underlying multinomial choice models. From the cyclic monotonicity property, we derive identifying inequalities without requiring any shape restriction for the distribution of the random utility shocks. These inequalities point identify model parameters under straightforward assumptions on the covariates. We propose a consistent estimator based on these inequalities, and apply it to a panel data set to study the determinants of the demand of bathroom tissue. JEL classification numbers: C14, C25

Nber Working Paper Series Experimenting with Measurement Error: Techniques with Applications to the Caltech Cohort Study
Measurement error is ubiquitous in experimental work. It leads to imperfect statistical controls, attenuated estimated effects of elicited behaviors, and biased correlations between characteristics. We develop simple statistical techniques for dealing with experimental measurement error. These techniques are applied to data from the Caltech Cohort Study, which conducts repeated incentivized sur...

Theory: The spatial model of elections can better be represented by using conditional logit than by multinomial logit. The spatial model, and random utility models in general, suffer from a failure to adequately consider the sub stitutability of candidates sharing similar or identical issue positions. Hypotheses: Multinomial logit is not much better than successive applications of binomial log...

Several game forms are given for implementing general social choice correspondences (SCC,' s) which satisfy Haskin' s conditions of monotonicity and No Veto Power. The game forms have smaller strategy spaces than those used in previously discovered mechanisms: the strategy for an individual consists of an alternative, two subsets (of alternatives), and a player number. For certain types of econ...
